How to Read the Nutrition Facts on Food Packaging

Serving size, energy, sugar, fat and salt are easier to compare when you first understand what quantity the nutrition table refers to.

Start with serving size. A nutrition value may refer to one serving, one item, the whole package or 100 grams.

When comparing two foods, make sure both sets of numbers use the same basis.

Energy, sugar, fat and salt are useful headline values, but ingredients and actual portion size also matter.
